I am currently in Dorchester doing research at the Dorset History Centre. By coincidence, there is an exhibition at the County museum called "Georgian Faces: Portrait of a County", showing paintings of key Dorset figures painted by the likes of Gainsborough and Reynolds, many of which are from private collections. The poster features a 1782 portrait of George Pitt, Colonel of the Dorset Militia, and there are several other paintings of militiamen, volunteers and rangers. These are reproduced in a handsome catalogue to accompany the show.

Well worth a visit if you are in the area!
