I am currently in Dorchester doing research at the Dorset History Centre. By coincidence, there is an exhibition at the County museum called "Georgian Faces: Portrait of a County", showing paintings of key Dorset figures painted by the likes of Gainsborough and Reynolds, many of which are from private collections. I'm shortly going to post a query on the use of mercenary soldiers in the British (and French) army. Fictional mercenary soldiers come up in several of the novels that I am studying. I'm pleased to have learned of Henry Bouquet at the conference--his story gives me a good starting point. The term 'mercenary' is overloaded with modern meaning so I look forward to hearing about 18th century perceptions of mercenarism from others on the website.
