What interests do you have in the period?
My research focuses on the relationship of politics and war to masculinity in modern Britain. My first book, The Independent Man, explored the ways in which political and personal freedom were conceived of in terms of 'manly independence', particularly in relation to the vote. Other projects have tried to think about citizenship in a broader way, and my current work is on the cultural history of the militia in eighteenth-century England.

The Bucks Volunteer

Today I visited Buckingham Old Gaol museum, which is well worth a visit for those interested in the history of the volunteer soldier in the 18th and 19th centuries.

There are three display cabinets maintained by the Bucks Military Museum Trust (who have a good website) which contain artefacts relating to the Royal Bucks King's Own Militia, Bucks…

Portraits of militiamen and volunteers

I am currently in Dorchester doing research at the Dorset History Centre. By coincidence, there is an exhibition at the County museum called "Georgian Faces: Portrait of a County", showing paintings of key Dorset figures painted by the likes of Gainsborough and Reynolds, many of which are from private collections. The poster features a 1782 portrait of George Pitt, Colonel of the…

Dear Matthew,
I am interested in ideas of masculinity with relation to Guards officers and the macaroni craze of the 1770s . I think we might have some things in common to talk about. Ifyou haven't seen my page , please take a look.Moira

Hi and thanks for the welcome.  I wish I could submit an abstract, it looks to be a really interesting event but the conference falls just when I'm submitting my thesis, so I'm going to have to pass!  Assuming I haven't gone mad by then, I do want to attend though.  It all depends on timing.  Vicky

Many thanks for the welcome Matthew. Yes, I have submitted an abstract and am looking forward to the conference. Heard about the project rather belatedly through WHN but think it's fab and am really interested to hear what everyone is working on.

Thank you for the welcome Matthew.  Very happy to have learned of this site at the BSECS conference.  I'm shortly going to post a query on the use of mercenary soldiers in the British (and French) army. Fictional mercenary soldiers come up in several of the novels that I am studying. I'm pleased to have learned of Henry Bouquet at the conference--his story gives me a good starting point. The term 'mercenary' is overloaded with modern meaning so I look forward to hearing about 18th century perceptions of mercenarism from others on the website.
